The Cooper Studio portrait experience is designed to be fun and relaxing. It begins the first time you contact us. We ask lots of questions about you and your loved ones, because we’ve found that the more we know about you, the better your photos will be.
Step 1: Contact!
When you contact Cooper Studio one of our photographers will have a short five minute chat to learn a little bit about what you desire.
At this stage you’ll be invited to book in or to visit us at our studio in South Fremantle WA for a Portrait Design Session. This is complimentary and without obligation.
Naturally, our photographers are often busy shooting. If we’re not availble when you call, another staff member will take your details, including your name, and two contact phone numbers. A photographer will get right back to you.
If you live in the country or it’s otherwise difficult for you to visit Fremantle for your Portrait Design Session, your photographer can do your Portrait Design Session via the phone.
Step 2: The Portrait Design
At your portrait design you will get the chance to meet our photographers and production staff, who will be looking after you for the rest of your photography experience. You’ll get to see lots of finished artwork examples in one of the finest studios in Western Australia.
A photographer will show you around, and then sit with you and have a chat about the sorts of photos you love and what makes you and your loved ones tick. We often get quite excited at this stage, as our creative juices get flowing! Your photographer will share some ideas, and if you like them we’ll plan them for your shoot.
We will also chat about your home – or the one you would love to have – so that we can help you plan which styles of photos, sizes and finishes would suit your space.
Once we’ve got this complete picture, we’ll also be able to quote on the artwork that’s right for you.
We’ll schedule your shoot at the end of the portrait design appointment if you haven’t booked in already. This is where we take payment of the shoot fee (or if you are lucky enough to be a promotion or competition winner, a small $50 refundable holding deposit).
Most weekday shoots are only $250, and most weekend shoots are only $350, excluding prints, and artwork. (Special shoots such as location shoots involving travel or very large family groups may be slightly more).
You are welcome to bring your whole family to the portrait design, however it is not essential. Please also bring your diary, a method of payment, and a pen and paper.
Step 3: Homework!
Now you need to plan what (and who!) to bring to the shoot. You will have already chatted with a photograper about choices of clothing, and also any special objects (or even pets!) that you want to include in the shoot.
It’s also important to talk about the shoot in detail with the other participants. The more they’re involved, the better it will be!
It’s also worth taking a tape measure and measuring the places you want to put your artwork. This will come in handy when choosing sizes.

Step 4: Your Followup Call
One of our photographers will call you between one and four days before your shoot. This is time to talk about any requests or ideas that other participants might want, and to revise the plan for the day. The photographer will be able to help you decide on any last minute ideas or alterations.
Step 5: The Shoot
Your shoot might be in our South Fremantle studio or at a nearby location around Fremantle. Either way, we meet at the Studio. Your comfort is very important. The shooting room and adjoining changeroom are private, and our building is fully airconditioned.
Most shoots last between 45 minutes and one hour. Where small children are involved we allow a little extra time, just in case.
Step 6: Coffee Time
Once your shoot is complete, there will be a short 25 minute break while your photographer puts together a presentation of the best images from your shoot.
We keep a supply of magazines, photography books, good coffee and chocolate on hand. There’s also a kids corner. So sit back and relax!
Step 7: The viewing and purchase session
Now it’s time to see the results of your effort and our creativity! You will be shown into our custom-made theatre room where your first look at your artwork will be up on the big screen (complete with a surround sound soundtrack!).
After the slideshow we will use state of the art software to create a folder of your favourite photos, and then your photographer will help you to design your artwork.
Our staff are well trained to review your images with you and to help you with cropping, finish and tone selection. Our software and projector will also allow you to see your finished products at their actual size.
We allow ample time for you to decide on your artwork (a second viewing can also be scheduled with a small holding deposit of $250 towards your final order) and we encourage you to invite everyone who would like to see your images, such as grandparents.
We’re happy to accept payment by cash, cheque, eftpos, and most credit cards. Payment plans are also available if you want to spread your purchase over time.
Step 8: Collection
We usually start production on your order immediately. Our expert photography staff carefully manage each part of the printing process and quality inspect images and finishes before you are contacted for collection.
Most products are ready within four weeks. Certain specialist products, such as some albums, can take a little longer.
We recommend that you collect your artwork in person to avoid transit damage of your precious work!
