Then your in luck!! These questions and more are answered in this interview with the owner and director of Cooper Studio – Craig Cooper.

He has been working in the industry for many years now in various different roles ranging from more commercial work, through to weddings and now predominately portraiture.

This vast amount of knowledge is what helps make Cooper Studio the success it is today, and Craig has kindly agreed to share some of this in the below interview.

This is from our family shoot with the wonderful Nat & Steve who brought in their two youngest children Tyson and Maddison, as well as some awesome outfits for us to play with!

If you read our previous post regarding this shoot, you would of seen some of the gorgeous stills from the shoot, including an adorable sequence between Steve and Tyson – where Tyson decides that the most hilarious thing to do is to smash his cupcake all over Steve’s face! This sequence really captured his cheeky personality, and in the video you can see it play out!

As you can imagine, with small children it is almost impossible to get them to smile unless they are actually having fun and enjoying themselves, and it is this ability to act like a kid and get them enjoying the experience that we pride ourselves on (it also is fun for us to act a bit silly!). Once they are relaxed and having fun, getting beautiful expressions is that much easier!

Part 1 is the beauty shoot with Erica – showing a behind the scenes look at what happens during a lingerie/swimwear shoot.

We had an absolute ball during this shoot (like usual!) although its always a little different being the centre of attention for a change….. which serves as a good reminder for how our customers feel being in front of the camera!

Hopefully you enjoy this peak into what we do, and it helps shed light on the reason why we love coming into work every day!!

Nat & Steve brought in their adorable kids Tyson and Maddison for this family shoot, along with some awesome outfits!

As Maddison was almost 1 when they came in, we did a bit of a take on the currently popular cake smash, and got some absolutely gorgeous shots of her playing with her cupcake!

Tyson has just turned 3 and loves everything to do with fireman and fire trucks, so Nat brought in a little fireman outfit, as well as a cute little man suit for a bit of variety. As is normal with most kids, Tyson didn’t want to be left out and decided he wanted photos with the cupcakes as well, which turned into a hilarious series of shots as he decided that it would be more fun to include Steve and smash the cake all over him!

We also captured some beautiful cuddly moments between Steve & each of the kids, as well as beautiful shots of Maddison’s very cheeky smile! – Check them out below.

Just a quick update in regards to our behind the scenes movie shoot! The exciting news is that the final finishing touches are being put on it as we speak, so it won’t be too long before we will be able to show you all this awesome sneak peak into what happens at Cooper Studio!!

While we are waiting for the final product, I thought I would share some of the stand out shots from Erica’s beauty/fashion shoot.

We had so much fun in the studio with Erica despite the odd situation (it’s not every day that as photographers we are surrounded by a sea of cameras capturing our every move!) and I think this shows in the end result.

Both of Jodie’s winning photos were more remarkable in that they were from commissioned family photography sessions. Shot in our studio, they actually represent the real work she does for her customers!

The Western Australian Professional Photography Awards (WAPPA) is the state’s premier photography competition, where the pros come out to show the very best that they’ve produced in the prior 24 months. Each photographer may only enter a handful of images.

The whole idea of us doing this little movie is to give you guys at home a little bit of an insight into what we get up to at work, and show behind the scenes at a studio shoot. We had two awesome guinea pigs shoots – the lovely Erica, who had a lingerie/swimwear shoot, and the wonderful Lewis family who lent us their kids Maddison and Tyson for a family shoot (with a bit of a twist of the popular cake smash theme).

The afternoon was a load of fun for all involved, which will hopefully come across in the video! Nicole and I ran around and had some extra fun taking candids of the whole experience so will share them here with a bit of a explanation & photo essay of how the day went!

 First up was Erica getting hair and makeup done by the talented Jessica Thorpe from Wonderland Hair & Styling.

While Erica was getting pampered, the film crew captured the process…..

Once Erica was finished with hair & makeup, her & Craig went through everything she brought in to see what we would use in the shoot….

& hung up her dresses….

Once the film crew set up their wall of tripods (we have never seen so many tripods and cameras in the studio before!!) …

We were able to get underway with Erica’s shoot. Craig & I took turns & had the fun of having a microphone attached to us… the audio should be interesting!

So I think you guys have got the idea, so will stop talking & let the candids from Erica’s shoot speak for themselves! (& if you think these look cool, wait until you see the shots we actually took!)

We had a lot of fun with the guys trying to get the shots they were wanting for the video – often at times we would be taking shots of Erica with the boys in the background of our shots – so really we were taking photos of them taking photos of us!!!

But as self-confessed gadget geeks, what we found extra cool about the film crew being there was some of the gear they had with them! Especially the skateboard with camera mount! You can see it in this shot next to me….

Once we had finished Erica’s shoot, we reset the studio in preparation for our family shoot – big thanks to Nat & Steve for lending us their kids!

This shoot ran in a similar fashion to the beauty shoot with Erica, except with the added challenge of small children! As a part of this shoot, we did a take on a cake smash using cupcakes – suffice to say the kids enjoyed them once they got stuck into it! We got some pretty adorable shots that we will have to share with you all!

Once we had finished up with the family shoot, we had a bit more fun playing around with the film crew to get more of the shots that they wanted….

& I even managed to get some embarrassing shots of Craig that he will probably find revenge for later!!

From there the last portion of the day was an interview with Craig to allow you guys to get a little bit of insight into the world of photography.

It can be a bit difficult to stay motivated, especially if your resolution relates to losing weight or getting fit, but just think of how awesome you will look if you commit and stick with it!

A great way to show off your hard work (& keep you motivated throughout the year and into the next one!) is to document all your hard work with a fitness shoot – something that reminds you how good you look and felt after months of hard work!

Kristy recently came in for a fitness shoot for this very reason – to show off how far she has come in her goal to become fit, and we loved the results so much we wanted to share them with you!

If your considering coming in for a fitness shoot, it’s always good to think of some props to bring along to the shoot that help express the look you want. Kristy brought in a great range of gear (and some very helpful assistants!) which really added to the shoot. We had everything from boxing gloves to weights to medicine balls, which meant we had several different looks and ideas to play with.

 Things to consider for a fitness shoot….

• what props you want to include – think weights, gloves etc – anything that shows the sport/activity that you are into
• what clothes to wear – workout gear looks good, but only if its nice, not the old baggy stuff we usually wear to work out in!
• shoes – if you are going for something sport specific, then bring whatever footwear you normally wear, otherwise nice sneakers work well
• body oil – this will really help to show off your muscles

This has meant exciting new prospects for our wedding photography, as it allows us to create some pretty cool effects outdoors!

In preparation for using the flash on location for our weddings, we gave the setup a trial run for a recent beach shoot that we did for VivaSwim.

Our gorgeous model happily posed while we roped the others into assisting us with the setup (at one point we had them standing in the shallows handholding the flash!) but it was well worth it considering the results!
